Just Listen

I live out where Tara's grandmother used to live, where the fields are sometimes brown, sometimes green, sometimes golden, sometimes white, and I often like to just listen.

David and the Ice Elf

This story also takes place where I live, where the Game Commission feeds the elk. But even though I've braved the snow to see the elk, I've yet to see an ice elf. Guess I'm just going to have to keep looking.

The Future of Yen-tzu

This may be my favorite picture book, at least in regard to my part of it, which, as with all my picture books, is only the words. It's another retelling, or possibly fracturing, of a Chinese folk tale, this one about the unpredictability of the future, the foolishness of emperors, and the way some people like to manipulate others into wars. Of course, the big question is are the people in power as foolish as they seem or truly evil.

The Magic Leaf

A Parent's Choice Honor Book

I combined three traditional Chinese folk tales about the traditional foolish man by having Lee Foo make all three traditional mistakes. This book is beautifully illustrated by Ju-Hong Chen who told me these old tales.

What If the Shark Wears Tennis Shoes?

A Children's Choice of the International Reading Association.

Stephen's persistently rational mother is unable to prevent a shark from visiting him in the night, so Stephen has to deal with the shark in his own way. Betsy Lewin's clever illustrations enhance this story. "A fresh, funny reworking of the 'nighttime anxieties overcome' theme." - School Library Journal
